Feeding Site Specificity in Frog-biting Midges (Corethrellidae)

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Hematophagous arthropods often choose predictable feeding sites on their hosts´ body, presumably to maximize blood uptake while minimizing costs. Feeding can be host-specific, mediated by intrinsic host characters and/or specific preferences of the feeder. We investigated site specificity in a community frog-biting midges ( Corethrella spp.) and frog hosts La Gamba, Costa Rica. Midge distribution differed significantly between 12 species, indicating that properties influence potential sites. However, realized were also different four morphotypes, across all but within certain shared hosts, partitioning among . propose diversity -frog associations is determined an interaction traits, e. g. calling site, defensive behavior or skin thickness, midge especially body size corresponding mouthpart size/structure.

New species and records of frog-biting midges from southern Brazil (Diptera: Corethrellidae).

Corethrella borkenti sp. n. is described, based on female and male adults, pupae and larvae, collected from tank bromeliads in the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil. The larva and pupa of C. alticola Lane, 1939 are described for the first time. New distributional records for C. alticola and C. vittata Lane, 1939 extend their distributions to the southern Atlantic Forest. A key to pupae of peru...

The Frog-Biting Midges of Borneo—From Two to Eleven Species (Corethrellidae: Diptera)

The Corethrella Coquillett of Borneo are described and interpreted, based primarily on material from Brunei Darussalam and a few locations in the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah. The eleven species include three previously named (one newly discovered in Borneo) and eight newly named species. The following new species are attributed to Borkent & Grafe: C. lutea, C. tigrina, C. gilva, C. na...

Spatial feeding preferences of ornithophilic mosquitoes, blackflies and biting midges.

The section of habitat used by particular bloodsucking insects when seeking bloodmeals may influence the spectrum of hosts to which they have access and consequently the diseases they transmit. The vertical distribution of ornithophilic bloodsucking Diptera (Culicidae, Simuliidae and Ceratopogonidae) was studied using bird-baited traps set at both ground and tree canopy levels. In total, 1240 m...

First report oF the mating behavior oF a species oF Frog-biting miDge (Diptera: corethrelliDae)

swarming is a common mating behavior present throughout Diptera and, in particular, in species of lower flies (nematocerous Diptera). mating aggregations have been observed in the wild and in laboratory colonies of mosquitoes (culicidae) and phantom midges (chaoboridae), but have been assumed to be absent in their sister taxon, the frog-biting midges (corethrellidae). corethrellidae is a monoge...

Host preference of Danish biting midges: Molecular identification of biting midges and their blood meal hosts

Culicoides vectors are critical to the survival and transmission of bluetongue virus as infection only occurs in areas or regions where competent vectors are present. The success of Culicoides biting midges as vectors is mainly related to their vast population sizes and to their means of dispersal. Their choice of host for blood feeding is sparsely described. The aim of the present study was to...
